WESTERN DISTRICT Series – Old Hong Kong Stories through the Lens

Overview

Foreign trade was growing in the mid-1800s, and Sheung Wan was the commercial centre of theChinese population. It was also as the residential area for Chinese, including for the great influx from China due to the Taiping Rebellion.

With the completion of the submarine cable construction, the city expanded westward, and Sai Ying Pun became densely populated. Shops selling dried seafood and herbal medicine set up all along the coastline, and Kennedy Town developed into a warehouse district. To cope with the plague that broke out in the 1890s, the government began building numerous hospitals and schools in the area.

Despite the recent accelerated development in Central and Western District with various ‘urban renewal’ projects and the extension of the MTR, these histories can still be traced.

The WESTERN DISTRICT Series has 2 parts – Old Hong Kong Stories through Lens and Let’s Toddle.

Old Hong Kong Stories through Lens features a presentation by researcher Ko Tim Keung on the district’s histories using old photographs.
