Terry Ng Hon Hei

Born in Hong Kong in 1981, Terry Ng received a Postgraduate Diploma in Photography from The University of Hong Kong School of Professional and Continuing Education , in 2012, and a Master of Visual Arts from Hong Kong Baptist University in 2016. Centring on photographic works in cultural and geographical contexts, Ng extends the possibilities of photography through exploring various art forms. His work has been exhibited internationally – at the Lianzhou International Photo Festival (2013) in China and Argentina International Photo Festival (2013) as part of the group exhibition “Yuen Yeung - Contemporary Photography Exhibition by Seven Hong Kong Artists”, at the “Hong Kong & Taiwan Showcase” programme of the Angkor Photo Festival (2015) in Cambodia, and in the group exhibition “Young Eyes+” at the Chiang Mai Photo Festival (2017) in Thailand. Exhibitions in Hong Kong include “Border” (2015), a solo show at Lumenvisum Gallery, and the group exhibition “Photography as Method” (2016). His work Bay After won the Studio Art & Extended Media award at the HKBU Master of Visual Arts Graduation Exhibition (2016).

Overview

An artist who creates through participation in response to various social issues, Terry NG Hon Hei believes ‘protest’ is to challenge pre-existing/established boundaries. “Beyond the Record: Workshop on Protest Photography” begins with an introduction to eminent Japanese photographers associated with this genre, including Tomatsu Shomei, Kano Tenmei, Kitai Kazuo, and Hamaya Hiroshi, and a guided appreciation of related works featured in the “PROVOKE” exhibition. Participants then reflect on and discuss the photography produced as a response to events with the Umbrella Movement in Hong Kong. Ng will also discuss the participants’ own creative approaches* and will also present a creative project of his own that he had never implemented. The workshop concludes with an introduction to the important works of protest photography of selected Hong Kong photographers.

*Each participant should prepare a creative proposal for discussion.
