David Wong: Reminisce. Present.
Overview
The Six Suites for Cello Solo composed by J.S. Bach three centuries ago has had a presence at numerous historical events in the past thirty years: at the Berlin Wall two days after it came down in November 1989, in New York City at the 9/11 memorial service in 2011, on the streets in Hong Kong during the Umbrella Movement in 2014, and in Paris for the 100th Anniversary of the end of the First World War in November 2018.
Once again the Bach Cello Suite is performed, only in this series with the accompaniment of scenes of incidents I have documented in the past year. I invite the audience to revisit the many familiar places and recall the events and faces of those who were once there, and as the music that has survived time plays on, may it prise open in us a tranquil moment in such changeful times and allow us to reflect upon our present and reminisce a distant past.
